Create a Thriving Woodlands Edge Shady Garden

Woodland's Edge Shady Garden SEEDPILLOW™ Kit — the easy, no-dig way to grow a layered community of Ecoregion 8 native plants beneath trees and along woodland borders. This 3-pack garden kit combines early spring flowers, pollinator habitat, and living groundcover—perfect for Indiana and the broader Midwest.

What’s Inside the Kit

  • 3 SEEDPILLOWS™ — each filled with organic grow media and mycorrhizae to naturally improve soil health
  • Complete planting instructions and a garden layout plan
  • Carefully selected native woodland-edge species:
    • Wild Strawberry (Fragaria virginiana)
    • Wild Geranium (Geranium maculatum)
    • Midland Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia)

Why Gardeners Love This Kit

  • Made for Woodland Edges: Designed for light shade to partial shade beneath trees and along open woodland borders
  • Early-Season Blooms: Shooting Star provides distinctive spring flowers, followed by Wild Geranium and the delicate white blossoms of Wild Strawberry
  • Pollinator-Friendly: Provides nectar and pollen for native bees and other beneficial insects when relatively few plants are flowering
  • Living Groundcover: Wild Strawberry spreads along the soil surface, helping conserve moisture, protect the soil, and create shelter for small wildlife
  • Layered Native Habitat: Combines flowering plants and low-growing groundcover to reflect the natural structure of a woodland understory
  • Eco-Friendly: Biodegradable, sustainable, and non-toxic materials

Planting Tips for Best Results

  • Plant in Fall or winter for best results, or whenever at least 60 days of cold weather remain.
  • Choose a location beneath or near trees with light shade to partial shade and average to slightly moist, well-drained soil.
  • Lay each SEEDPILLOW™ directly on the prepared garden bed where you want the plant to grow.
  • Mist each SEEDPILLOW™ with water for at least 10 seconds, or place it outside immediately before rainfall.
  • Give the plants 18 inches to 3 feet of room to spread.
  • When planting near a tree, position the SEEDPILLOWS™ approximately 12–18 inches away from the trunk and major surface roots.
  • For spring planting, place the Wild Strawberry and Wild Geranium SEEDPILLOWS™ in sandwich bags and freeze them for 8 weeks before planting.
  • Place the Shooting Star SEEDPILLOW™ in a sandwich bag and freeze it for 30 days before planting.
  • Be patient: Shooting Star is naturally slow to germinate and establish.

Helpful Garden-Bed Tip

For an easy weed barrier, lay flattened, uncoated cardboard over the planting area and cut openings where the SEEDPILLOWS™ will be placed. Cover the remaining cardboard with mulch, keeping the SEEDPILLOWS™ uncovered.

Remember: Sleep, Creep, Leap!

  • Sleep — Year 1: Plants concentrate on establishing strong root systems and may show limited growth above the soil.
  • Creep — Year 2: Plants gradually expand their foliage and may begin producing flowers.
  • Leap — Year 3: Established plants reach greater size, vigor, and flowering potential.
